THE RACING PUBLIC HAS HAD A GUTFUL OF THE MM POLITICAL CIRCUS

MAGIC MILLIONS is a terrific concept and a tremendous draw-card but the racing and punting public have had a gutful of the political and media circus that it creates on an annual basis.

Gerry and Singo can be relied on every January to provide ‘three ring entertainment’ to rival the great Barnum and Bailey but like the little boy who cried ‘wolf,’ the pleas for help are falling on deaf ears.

‘BAILEY BASHING’ – A LOST CAUSE FOR THE RACING MEDIA IN VICTORIA

THE Australian and international horse racing fraternity can learn much from what Victoria has achieved. That does not mean there is nothing left for Victoria to learn from the rest of the racing world.

Racing Victoria is lucky to have a chairman with the political background and foresight of Michael Duffy and a chief steward with the enthusiasm and integrity of Terry Bailey. Both have endless talent and are the best in their field in this country.

THERE are plenty in racing who believe that controversial commentator Steve Moran was sacked as morning host at Melbourne Racing Radio station Sport 927 because he refused to ‘suck up and survive.’

Despite the ‘lame excuses’ of station management, one suspects that Moran paid the price for going into bat on behalf of the punting public against some high profile identities, including Tabcorp boss, Robert Nason and millionaire owner, Lloyd Williams.

THE ‘GOOD’ ONES THAT GOT AWAY FROM QUEENSLAND RACING

THE integrity and policing of racing has been a hobby horse of mine over the years and when it comes down to ‘the ones who got away’, Queensland wins hands down.

Don’t jump to the conclusion of any suggestion that some industry personnel have enjoyed a modicum of start. My reference is solely to the incredible number of high profile stewards that have been lost to racing in the Rainbow State.

OFFICIALS BARING THEIR BACKSIDES TO THE ‘LOONEY LEFT’

ONE of the most appealing and endearing aspects of this wonderful country is our freedom of choice, which makes it so much sadder to see sections of the racing industry taking the high moral ground and baring their backsides to the ‘Looney Left’.

Jumps racing is not everyone’s cup of tea – and I for one don’t want to see horses put down in full view of the public – but it is the right of those involved in this long-standing section of the industry to survive.
