CUP BERTHS ADD EXTRA INTEREST TO CITY TATTERSALLS CUP

HORSES vying for entry into the Melbourne Cup will add extra interest to the $101,550 Listed City Tattersalls Cup (2400m) at Royal Randwick this Saturday.

The Metropolitan runner-up, Lodge The Deeds and highly rated New Zealand visitor, Mooseisloose, head a strong field of 19 nominations for the staying handicap for three year-olds and upward.

They will face off with Danny Williams’ Cape Breton (NZ), Anthony Cummings’ Nothin’ Leica Cat and Gai Waterhouse’s Common Objective who are all hoping for a penalty to help them climb the ballot order for the Melbourne Cup.

Currently Cape Breton is number 50 on the Melbourne Cup ballot with Nothin’ Leica Cat sitting at 55 and Common Objective at 56.

Two horses need to win to pass the first ballot clause for the Melbourne Cup and they are Brian Smith’s Hume (NZ) and Pat Carey’s Courtney (NZ).

Lorne Dancer became the highest weighted winner of the City Tattersalls Club Cup when he won the race last year.

Other previous winners include Bush Honey (2005), Henderson Bay (NZ) (2003), Grandmaster (NZ) (1997) and Flotsam (1966).

Gai Waterhouse’s Shadow Assassin will be trying to follow in the footsteps of super sprinter Northern Meteor and win the  $100,000 Listed Brian Crowley Stakes  (1200m) on Saturday before heading to Melbourne and taking out the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes.

Shadow Assassin, a last start third in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes, will be tackling Tim Martin’s impressive Indian Ocean, which has three wins from five starts.

Other standouts in the 17 nominations include Chris Waller’s Stryker, John Thompson’s Accounting, Happy Hippy and Fairy Gumnut and Paul Messara’s Silver Spur.

Northern Meteor won the prestigious three year-old sprint last year and other winners include Reigning To Win (2006), Apple Danish (1996), Let’s Get Physical (1985) and Swift Gun (1981).

Tracy Green’s impressive Queenslander Mr Hornblower will take on Gai Waterhouse’s Belong To Many and Allan Denham’s Youthful Jack in the $100,000 Listed City Tattersalls Lightning Handicap (1100m).

Ann-Maree Robinson’s Friday Creek, Guy Walter’s Lyncean Academy and Joe Pride’s Malcolm are among the 20 nominations.
