Devon Princess raced quite fiercely and refused to settle in the early and middle stages before taking up a position three wide leaving the 900m.

Apprentice J Beriman (Escamillo) was issued with a severe reprimand for failing to make a greater effort to keep her mount on a straight course between the 200m and the 100m, whilst it was hanging out under pressure, and in doing so impeding Lucky Generation (second placegetter) by taking that horse wider on the track.  It was noted that inside the 100m, apprentice J Beriman took the necessary action to stop riding her mount with the whip and straighten it.  Neither the connections nor the Stewards proceeded with an objection on behalf of the second placegetter due to the three quarter length margin at the end of the race.

D Dunn (Onpicalo) was questioned as to why he didn’t continue to ride his mount out to the end of the race with the whip.  D Dunn explained that his mount was hanging in and when it was continuing to shift ground he felt he was duty bound, as required under the rules, to stop riding and straighten his mount as it had the potential to cause interference to Mighty Like which was racing to his inside.  The Stewards, having the benefit of viewing the head on film of the incident, were satisfied that Onpicalo was hanging in to the degree that warranted D Dunn’s subsequent actions and therefore accepted his explanation.

When questioned D Oliver (Mighty Like) explained that in the early stages his mount was left without cover and he was left with no other option than to allow his mount to stride forward as it had a tendency to over-race and he indicated the blinkers may be removed for its next start.

He said the filly travelled comfortably throughout the event, but when the field sprinted from the 600m his mount was unable to quicken and, in his view, the run had some merit in the Vocalise was disadvantaged by the slow early tempo. A post-race veterinary examination of Vocalise did not reveal any abnormalities. A post-race veterinary examination of Blackboard Special did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr W Lawson confirmed the instructions and advised the instructions had been consistent with its usual racing pattern. Mr Lawson was advised that Blackboard Special would be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards in respect to its racing manners.
