TRAINER Leon Macdonald confirmed today that one of the early favorites, Rebel Raider, is out of the Melbourne Cup and will have to undergo surgery.

Rebel Raider, winner of the Victorian and South Australian Derbys, has suffered a bone chip in a rear fetlock joint, which was detected after trackwork yesterday.

 

KARAKATSANIS PLEASED WITH TRIAL EFFORT AT BROADMEADOW

TRAINER Con Karakatsanis has no qualms about his star Black Piranha being "competitive" first-up in the Patinack Farm Cameron Handicap at Broadmeadow on September 16.

Karakatsanis was speaking after Black Piranha had finished second in a special 1100m trial on the course proper today.

THE weights for the 2009 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) and Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m)
were headed by Australian horses when handicaps were released by Racing Victoria Limited
(RVL) Chief Handicapper Greg Carpenter today.

The 2007 Melbourne Cup winner Efficient and reigning Tatts Cox Plate champion Maldivian were
both allocated 58kg and have the honour of heading the handicaps for both Cups this year.

WEST Australian Sprinting sensation Scenic Blast was crowned the 2008/09 Australian Racehorse of the Year presented by Luxbet.com at Palladium at Crown tonight, and picked up another two awards to dominate the event.

$25 MILLION TO BE SPENT ON RE-VITALISING WARWICK FARM

THE Board of the Australian Jockey Club today (August 31) announced that $25 million would be spent on upgrading Warwick Farm Racecourse.

The major initiative involves new member, spectator, racing and training facilities being built under a Grand Plan for Warwick Farm that will see its future secured as a racing and training venue for decades.

THE first month of the new racing season has just ended and the statistics show that Sydney Saturday racing has proved an absolute graveyard for favorite backers.

AUGUST was a woeful month for the strike rate of successful favorites at the major NSW metropolitan meeting with ONLY ONE in FOUR saluting. Of the 40 races run only 10 favorites won.

BLACK PIRANHA AND NEWPORT TO TRIAL AT BROADMEADOW

GROUP 1 stars - Sydney's Black Piranha and Newcastle's Melbourne Cup hope Newport - will contest a special barrier trial on the Broadmeadow course proper on Wednesday (September 2).

The 1100m trial - to be run at 8:30 am - has four runners, also including the Paul Messara well-bred pair, Saint Nicholas and Gravitas.

DENMAN AND TRUSTING WERE EQUALLY IMPRESSIVE

RISING star DENMAN was as impressive in victory as runner-up TRUSTING was in defeat in Saturday’s $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose for the three-year-olds at Rosehill.

Denman, $2.40fav, emerged from his comfort zone to score by a length and three quarters but Trusting, $6.50, gave him five lengths start and was having his third start in as many weeks.
