IN his popular column, ‘SILKS & SADDLES,’ published by the NORTH QUEENSLAND REGISTER, respected racing writer TERRY BUTTS reports on a determined bid by trainer Daryl Hansen to resurrect the career of top sprinter Essington in the Mackay Newmarket on Thursday.

Butts, just back from a trip to Vanuatu where he experienced an earthquake (no he hadn’t had a dozen or two of the local brew), reports on the up-coming annual meeting on the Island.

He also has an interesting piece on the Laura Cup meeting and again raises the plight of Steve Hogno who has to be the worst treated man in racing in Queensland still battling for justice after the Kooralbyn ‘fun day’ 14 years ago.

Here is his column:

IN his popular column, ‘SILKS & SADDLES,’ published by the NORTH QUEENSLAND REGISTER, respected racing writer TERRY BUTTS reports on a bid by Rockhampton Trainers’ Association president Jim Rundle to have the city-based ATA (Queensland branch) work with his organization on the controversial issue of a Workers’ Compensation Levy.

There are growing concerns among country trainers that their city cousins, especially a handful of ‘fat cats,’ are attempting to dictate to their mates at Racing Queensland how the Levy will work.

Butts also reports on the successful Rockhampton carnival and how a new star of country racing in Queensland has emerged.

Here is his column, a day earlier this week, to compensate for the lateness of the last edition:

IN his popular column, ‘SILKS & SADDLES,’ published by the NORTH QUEENSLAND REGISTER, respected racing writer TERRY BUTTS reports on a safety problem that has reached dangerous proportions in Cairns.

Wallabies have inundated the track and are causing concerns for racing and training activities at Cannon Park.

Butts also reports on a prominent owner’s concerns about the operation of barrier stalls in the north and the successful return north of apprentice jockey Ashley Butler who rode four winners at Moranbah on a hit-and-run visit from Brisbane.

Here is the Butts column – with our apologies for the delay this week:
