FRESH FACES TO TACKLE ESTABLISHED STARS IN HK JOCKEYS' SERIES

RISING stars of the future will do battle with some of the most established jockeys from around the globe in the Cathay Pacific International Jockeys’ Championship at Happy Valley on Wednesday,  December 9.

The only former series winner in this year’s cast is Douglas Whyte who has won the title on a record three occasions (2002, 2007 and 2008), while four invitees will negotiate the unique Happy Valley circuit for the first time.

“This year we wanted to shake things up a bit and place the stars of tomorrow up against the champions of today and we believe we have achieved a nice balance, said Mr William A Nader, the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Executive Director of Racing.

"Matthew Chadwick and Joe Talamo are still teenagers while William Buick is a comparative veteran at 21 but they are all among the hottest properties in their home racing environment.

“Chantal Sutherland is a top jockey in Toronto with success in America and is known just as well out of the saddle for her modeling contracts. Incidentally, Hong Kong viewers may already know Chantal and Joe Talamo as they are featured on the ‘Jockeys’ reality documentary series on Animal Planet TV.

“The rest of the line-up is made up of champion jockeys with some of the best jobs in racing and we feel their contrasting styles and expertise will ignite a very popular competition and an exciting race meeting.

All 12 jockeys are randomly allocated their mounts and the winner will be the one accumulating most points across three races. The champion jockey will receive HK$200,000 and a trophy. HK$100,000 will go to the runner-up.
