SUNDAY'S crucial Cathay Pacific International Mile and Sprint Trials demonstrated that Hong Kong horses are going to take the power of beating when the Turf World Championships roll around on December 13.
Fellowship (Paul O'Sullivan/Zac Purton) gained a deserved day in the sun taking out the Cathay Pacific International Mile Trial from Sight Winner and the fast finishing defending international champion, Good Ba Ba.

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS SHARE TOP-BILLINT IN INTERNATIONAL TRIALS
PLACES in the Turf World Championships are the prize in Sunday’s double header of the Cathay Pacific International Mile and Sprint Trials and the competition is fierce.There are six international Group 1 winners spread across the two races and three Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Race defending champions among them, namely Good Ba Ba, Eagle Mountain and Inspiration.

THE John Moore-trained Collection threw down the gauntlet to some of the world’s best horses targeting next month's Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Cup with an awesome display in Cathay Pacific International Cup Trial at Sha Tin on Sunday.
Last season's Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Derby winner could scarcely have been more impressive landing this key trial as he scored by two lengths from outsider Unique Jewellery and the consistent Mr Medici.

JOHN MOORE STABLE CHASING THIRD STRAIGHT CUP TRIAL WIN
VIVA Pataca heads a powerful deputation from the John Moore stable in his bid to win a third consecutive Cathay Pacific International Cup Trial (HKGr.2-2000m) on Sunday.This is a race designed to shed plenty of light on where the four established Gr.1 performers in the field – Viva Pataca, Thumbs Up, Collection and Packing Winner – are at in relation to their respective targets in the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Races on 13 December.

PACKING WINNER STUNS IN MISSION HILLS SHA TIN TROPHY SUCCESS
ARGUABLY the best-contested domestic race in recent memory threw up the biggest-priced Group race result for many years as Packing Winner stole the Mission Hills Sha Tin Trophy (G.3, 1600m) at odds of almost 160-1.
In a race where the attention was fixed on the Group 1 stars of last season such as Viva Pataca, Good Ba Ba, Collection and Thumbs Up, trainer Peter Ho upstaged his peers by training the quinella with Mr Medici finishing second.

GREATER COVERAGE OF FEATURE RACING FROM AUSTRALIA
THE Hong Kong Jockey Club will increase its simulcast of Australian content commencing with five races from the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on Saturday.
The simulcasts planned for the remainder of this year include the Cox Plate meeting (October 24), Victoria Derby meeting (Flemington, October 31) and Patinack Farm Clasic on Emirates Stakes Day (Flemington, November 7).

WORLD'S BEST UNDER CONSIDERATION FOR INVITE TO HONG KONG
INITIAL entries for the 2009 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Races point towards a series of season-defining clashes with hundreds of the sport’s best active thoroughbreds under consideration for an invitation to Sha Tin for the Turf World Championships on December 13.
At the close of first nominations last week, the Hong Kong Jockey Club received 298 nominations, comprising 79 individual Gr.1 winners. These entries hail from a tally of 17 racing jurisdictions.

NOTHING APPEARS AMISS WITH SCENIC BLAST AFTER STUMBLING
AUSTRALIAN Horse of the Year, Scenic Blast, lost momentum and stumbled before finishing last in the rich Sprinters Stakes in Japan on Sunday.
Scenic Blast, the third favorite, was chasing a $US1 million Global Sprint Challenge bonus for a third Group 1 victory in three different countries.

In a new departure aimed at assisting overseas horses targeting the Turf World Championships, the Racing Committee of the Hong Kong Jockey Club has approved the participation of up to four foreign runners in each of the key November trials for the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Races a month later.
The three prep races concerned are the Cathay Pacific International Cup Trial on 15 November and the Cathay Pacific International Sprint and Mile Trials on 22 November.
