RACING Minister Steve Dickson has announced a local Queensland company has been appointed to construct the first phase of the Gold Coast Turf Club (GCTC) redevelopment.

Mr Dickson said Alder Constructions had been awarded the contract for phase one of the project, which would see vital infrastructure improvements for the club.

“The Newman Government is continuing to deliver upon its commitment to rebuild the Queensland racing industry,” Mr Dickson said.

“This project, part of the LNP’s $110 million pledge for racing infrastructure improvements across the state, will deliver a world class club facility on the Gold Coast in time for this year’s Melbourne Cup celebrations.

“I’m determined to create a sustainable future for Queensland racing and the GCTC redevelopment will provide a much needed boost, allowing the club to attract stronger race fields and bring more patrons to the track.”

Mr Dickson said works in the first stage of the GCTC project included renovations of the existing grandstand lounge, bar and restaurant facilities, and construction of ten new corporate boxes.

GCTC Chairman Brett Cook said the redevelopment was one of the most significant events in the history of the club and paved the way for substantial long-term economic benefits for the city.

“The racing industry and the turf club are of great importance to the Gold Coast and the redevelopment comes at a time when we need major project impetus creating jobs and injecting millions of dollars into the local economy,” Mr Cook said.

“The Newman Government and Racing Queensland have recognised this and worked very effectively with the club to make this vital upgrade project a reality.

“We’re delighted that a Gold Coast company has been awarded the tender and look forward to working with Alder to make our club a racing and events venue locals will be proud of.”

Racing Queensland Chairman Kevin Dixon said he was excited to see the first stage of the redevelopment get underway.

“Racing Queensland sees real benefits in utilising local workers, trades and suppliers for projects such as the GCTC Grandstand Redevelopment and Corporate Boxes,” Mr Dixon said.

“We’re confident Alder has an established team of local designers, subcontractors and suppliers that will be used to deliver the upgrade to the stringent level of quality and timeframes demanded.”
