OF all the racing States in Australia, for some unknown reason QUEENSLAND is the hot-bed of rumor mongering and racetrack gossip – perhaps it’s the warmer climate. So we decided to air some of these ‘stories’ and ‘e-mails’ that we receive in a weekly 'BELIEVE IT OR NOT' column.

We had a wide variety of e-mails this week ranging from the lack of racing under lights on the grass at the Sunshine Coast to a response from Wayne Purchase on 'Shaun Timmins,' queries on the court appeal concerning the Queensland Racing Board election and an intresting attack on the media at the Toowoomba Turf Club annual meeting.

MIDWEEK MEETINGS TRANSFERRED WHILE WORK PROCEEDS

Following discussions between Queensland Racing Limited (QRL) and the Brisbane Racing Club (BRC) the decision has been taken to transfer two (2) Eagle Farm mid-week meetings in October 2009, to enable the BRC to renovate the Eagle Farm course proper.

Listed below are the meetings to be transferred:

  • Wednesday, October 21, 2009 – Transferred to Gold Coast Turf Club (GCTC)
  • Wednesday, October 28, 2009 – Transferred to Toowoomba Turf Club (TTC)

The best news tip we received this week was that former top lady jockey, Lacey Morrison, would soon join the staff of Queensland Racing. There are reports of sleepless nights for trainers who ‘milked’ the CHAPS scheme. We had e-mails about the Sunshine Coast Turf Club elections, concerns over the dumping of a Punters’ Club host and bouquets for champion jockey Robert Thompson from the folk of Cloncurry.

JACKSON TAKES OVER AS CHAIRMAN AS MAIR LOSES BOARD SEAT

THERE has been a changing of the guard at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club with Don Jackson replacing long-serving Les Geeves as the Chairman.

Leading local trainer Mick Mair lost his position on the Board of Directors to Darcy Tyrrell, a former Queensland Racing executive.

WIFE OF CHAMPION JOCKEY, MICK, DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS

THE racing industry in Queensland is mourning the death of Maureen Dittman, wife of former champion jockey, Mick, who died last night after a long illness.

Maureen, who married Mick when he was an apprentice, enjoyed success as a trainer with her biggest winner, All Ashore, successful in the 1990 Gold Coast Goldmarket.

'WHAT A GREAT TRIP - WHY NOT JOIN US NEXT YEAR?'

SUNSHINE COAST-based BARNEY CAMPBELL has taken a group of close to 30 to the annual Birdsville Cup meeting for the last 15 years – and last week was no exception.

Here is Barney’s report on his latest adventure to the Holy Grail of Bush Racing:

OF all the racing States in Australia, for some unknown reason QUEENSLAND is the hot-bed of rumor mongering and racetrack gossip – perhaps it’s the warmer climate. So we have decided to air some of these ‘stories’ in a regular 'BELIEVE IT OR NOT' column.

During the week we have received an extra large amount of e-mails on a number of contentious topics ranging from concerns over a lack of policing at last Saturday’s Eagle Farm race meeting; suggestions for Warren Williams in his new role as Racetrack Development Manager; and even a blast from the past for Queensland Racing looking back to the Daubney-Rafter Inquiry.

BREDHAUER SCORES AGAIN AT BIRDSVILLE CUP MEETING

THE saying goes - you can take the boy out of the bush but you can never take the bush out of the boy - and that certainly applies to Peter Bredhauer.

After travelling to some of the biggest race meetings around the world, Bredhauer says there is one major he would never miss – the Holy Grail of bush racing – the Birdsville Cup.

WILLIAMS TO JOIN QRL AS RACETRACK DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

WARREN Williams, recently awarded the Australian Racecourse Manager of the Year at the Australian Racecourse Managers Awards for the second time, has accepted a position with the State’s governing body, Queensland Racing Limited (QRL).

Williams has over 25 years of experience working with racecourses and, in particular, has spent the last 15 of those in Queensland.

LONG TIME SUPPORTER VOWS NEVER TO RETURN DESPITE HIS SUCCESS

OVER the years respected racing writer TERRY BUTTS has enjoyed success as a bookmaker, owner and trainer at the Cairns Amateurs. He trained the winner of another feature race winner last weekend.

But Butts has refused to return claiming what was once one of the best draw-cards on the North Queensland racing calendar has degenerated into what he calls a ‘dusty drunk-fest, littered with louts, port-a-loos and smoking cages – relics from the Third World.’
