NEWSTAR Racing, the Australian charity racing syndicate that raises money for the McGrath Foundation, is moving into the UK market.

Gay Kelleway, one of Britain’s leading horse trainers, has joined forces with the Australian-based charity racing club, founded by Bryan Martin OAM, to become the first overseas trainer of the Newstar Racing Club.

Formerly a leading jockey, Gay started training horses in 1991, and has trained almost 200 winners to date. She has been described by the UK National media as "one of the most exciting and talented young trainers of modern times."

Newmarket-based Gay said: “I met Bryan Martin when I was in Melbourne for the Australian Open, and he told me the concept and about potentially tapping into the UK market. I had also spoken to another Newstar Trainer, Gai Waterhouse, in the past and she was very enthusiastic about it.”

Newstar in the UK will be focussed on attracting ex-pat Australians who are familiar with the McGrath Foundation and would like to support the cause.

To seal the association, one of Kelleway's owners, Andrew Cristou, has agreed to lease the club a two-year-old colt for this year which has already been named Newstar McGrath.

Newstar McGrath is progressing nicely and Gay is hoping the colt could give the Aussies something to shout about at Royal Ascot in June.

As Gay notes: “There are an estimated two million Aussies in London alone who we hope will support this cause. It's very kind of Andrew Cristou to lease the two-year-old which we are hoping will give us lots of fun, as well as earning some prize money for a very worthwhile cause.”

As in Australia, members who sign up will pay a $95 membership fee per year (approximately £53). This membership fee will entitle members to a number of benefits, as well as providing for the upkeep of the horses. Any prizemoney is donated directly to the McGrath Foundation.

Prior to her horse training career, Gay Kelleway was a leading jockey and rode her first winner for leading trainer Clive Brittian at the tender age of 17. Gay also finished second in the ladies Amateur Championship in the same year.

After turning professional, she became Champion Professional Lady Rider three years in a row. In total Gay rode 60 winners, no mean feat in a country where racing is 95% male-orientated. One of those winners was Sprowston Boy who was to give Gay another "first" in racing history when she became the only lady rider, to date, to ride a winner at Royal Ascot in The Queen Alexandra Stakes.

RACING FOR A CAUSE – THE NEWSTAR STORY by Bryan Martin OAM

NEWSTAR Racing is a unique not-for-profit club that races superbly bred horses with Australia’s top trainers, including Gai Waterhouse, David Hayes, Mick Price, Mike Moroney, Mark Kavanagh and Paul Perry of Choirsir fame.

A low $95 per year entry or $250 for 3 years membership to the club not only includes the excitement of watching the club’s horses racing around Australia, but also gives discounts and exclusive offers with NewStar’s corporate partners.

But best of all, all prizemoney won by the club’s horses goes to the McGrath Foundation. Gai has been fantastic in her promotion of NewStar Racing and has given us a share in a More Than Ready filly.

On joining our members receive a $50 betting voucher, $40 of L’Oreal products, Pulse Pharmacy discount card for 10%, Dimattina restaurant discounts of 10%, 20% off Cosmo Couture handbags, discounts on the Colonial Tramcar and Eureka Tower.

The NewStar Racing Club was set up in February 2009 by racing identity Bryan Martin OAM who, after watching his mother and grandmother battle breast cancer, decided to use his 35 years of experience in the racing industry to establish an avenue for the sport to help women fight against the disease.

With the support of Glenn McGrath at the McGrath Foundation, he founded NewStar Racing as an affordable entry into racehorse membership, but with a difference – all prizemoney would be given to the McGrath Foundation.

With leading female jockey Clare Lindop as club ambassador, NewStar Racing has been an instant success with membership growing daily, we now have 1,050 members from all over Australia.

NewStar Racing Club has NewStar Lass. The filly won at Mornington during 2009 and the members certainly shook the stand that day!! We have donated 10K to the foundation from that win.

The McGrath Foundation was co-founded by Jane McGrath and her cricketing husband Glenn after Jane’s diagnosis and initial recovery from breast cancer. The aim of the foundation is to provide funding for breast care nurses on a national basis and provide greater public awareness of breast cancer, particularly amongst younger women.

NewStar Racing Club is dedicated to helping this worthy cause and has become the racing arm of the McGrath Foundation. Imagine the experience of being together at the races and seeing a NewStar Racing Club horse race towards the finish line!

Our annual aim is to raise 100K per year to place a special nurse into the community for the McGrath Foundation.

Our stable of horses run in the McGrath logo colors, Pink , white and black.

We have fillies by Royal Academy, Encosta De Lago, Rock of Gibraltar, Commands and More Than Ready.

The Commands filly is By Commands from Bonanova and is named Maiya Nova, Lee Fleming at Eliza Park Stud has been fantastic with his support for NewStar Racing.

All our fillies are leased from the breeders and we return the standard 25-30% to the lessor when we have success and prizemoney after the lessor’s deduction is directed to the Foundation.

We have a great incentive for all members:
