ONLY ONE IN FOUR SYDNEY FAVORITES SUCCESSFUL IN AUGUST

THE first month of the new racing season has just ended and the statistics show that Sydney Saturday racing has proved an absolute graveyard for favorite backers.

AUGUST was a woeful month for the strike rate of successful favorites at the major NSW metropolitan meeting with ONLY ONE in FOUR saluting. Of the 40 races run only 10 favorites won.

Pin-up horses for the punters during the month were Denman and Swift Alliance, which both won twice and were heavily-backed on each occasion.

But Black Type racing was largely a minefield for punters. Of the 13 Black Type races run favorites were successful in only three. Six of the winners were at double figure odds with Friday Creek at $91 an unbelievable result in the G3 Concorde Stakes at Rosehill.

Here’s a sample of the feature race winners:

MELBOURNE SATURDAY FAVORITES HAVE BETTER STRIKE RATE THAN THOSE IN SYDNEY

WEEKEND punters fared much better in MELBOURNE during the opening month of the new season where ONE IN EVERY TWO favorites saluted. Of the 40 races run 20 were won by favorites.

Night racing proved a real graveyard for punters at Moonee Valley last season but the first day meeting of the new season on Saturday, August 22, proved quite the opposite. Bookies went home with black eyes after serving up six successful favorites. The longest priced winner on the day was at $7.

SEVEN of the 11 Black Type races in Melbourne during August were won by favorites. MIC MAC was the punters’ pin-up horse winning the G2 Memsie and Listed Aurie’s Star and was heavily-backed on each occasion.

The two biggest surprise packets were Let Go Thommo in the G3 Bletchingly Stakes at $21 and Figure of Speech at $51 in the Listed D’Urban Stakes.
