NOMINATIONS AND SECOND DECLARATIONS FOR CARNIVAL FEATURE RACES
Nominations and second declarations closed today with Racing Victoria Limited (RVL) for a string of 2009 Spring Racing Carnival features.
A total of 85 horses, including five international raiders, remain in contention for a BMW Caulfield Cup berth following second declarations for the 17 October feature.
Godolphin pair Crime Scene and Kirklees and Singapore star Jolie’s Shinju are the threeinternationals amongst the 58 horses that remain in contention for the Tatts Cox Plate on 24October at Moonee Valley.
Second declarations for both the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate are marginally up on 2008 figureswith both races boasting a stronger international flavour.
Third declarations for both events will close at 12 noon on Tuesday, 6 October.
Caulfield’s marquee three-year-old races, The Age Caulfield Guineas (10 October) and the Schweppes Thousand Guineas (14 October), were the other Group 1 events for which seconddeclarations were taken today.
Thirty colts and geldings remain in contention for the Caulfield Guineas with last Saturday’s Prelude winner Demerit among those paid up for. Other notable acceptors include his stablemate Denman, So You Think and the John Thomson-trained pair Trusting and Onemorenomore.
Prelude winner Irish Lights heads the list of 53 fillies still vying for a berth in the Thousand Guineas, with classySydneysiders Lovemelikearock, Melito and More Joyous amongst her rivals.
Final declarations close at 9am on Tuesday, 6 October for the Caulfield Guineas and at 9am onMonday, October 12 for the Thousand Guineas.
Nominations closed today for the Carnival’s coveted three-year-old staying features, the AAMI Victoria Derby and Crown Oaks, which will be run at Flemington on 31 October and 5 November respectively.
A total of 79 horses have been entered for the Victoria Derby with Onemorenomore, Tribunal and Manhattan Rain amongst the higher profile entries, whilst 75 fillies, including Irish Lights,Lovemelikearock and Melito, have been nominated for the Victoria Oaks.
First declarations for both events will be taken at 12 noon on Tuesday, 20 October.
In other news, an updated elimination order for the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate, Caulfield Guineas and Thousand Guineas will be released by RVL tomorrow afternoon.
