SPEED GIFTED MOVES UP ELMINATION ORDER FOR BIG CUPS

RACING Victoria Chief Handicapper, Greg Carpenter today issued a 2kg penalty to Speed Gifted in both the BMW Caulfield Cup and Emirates Melbourne Cup after his win in the Group 1 Metropolitan Handicap at Randwick on Saturday.

The penalty takes the Lee Freedman-trained six-year-old to 53kg in both races. It moves him

to equal 24th in the elimination order for the Caulfield Cup and 25th in order in the Melbourne

Cup.

Carpenter said: “Speed Gifted dominated his opposition in the Metropolitan Handicap and while

the race was run on rain-affected going he had already won impressively at Flemington on good

going since the weights were released. The penalty is greater than those imposed on the most

recent winners of the Metropolitan reflecting the ease of his victory.”

Carpenter did not issue a penalty to Light Vision for his win in the Bart Cummings Handicap

over 2500m at Flemington on Saturday.

“Light Vision’s performance in winning his second successive Bart Cummings this year under

58.5kg was very good but he is yet to win at Group level and it is difficult to justify raising him

above his original weight of 52.5kg.” Carpenter said.

Light Vision has 52.5kg in both races and is equal 29th in the Caulfield Cup elimination order

and 30th in order in the Melbourne Cup.

Third declarations for the BMW Caulfield Cup and Tatts Cox Plate will be taken at Noon

tomorrow (Tuesday, 6 October) with second declarations for the Emirates Melbourne Cup

closing at the same time.

The latest elimination order for both the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup will be released on

Wednesday, 7 October.
