A short distance later Bachman, which was overracing, had to be checked away from the heels of Hampton Court when the pace was steadied. In the incident Bachman ran out, resulting in Lord Beckworth being checked away from the heels of Scratch Me Lucky. Again at the 1000m Bachman had to be checked away from the heels of Hampton Court. T Clark, rider of Law, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that he permitted his mount to shift in passing the 1100m when insufficiently clear of Risen From Doubt, resulting in Risen From Doubt directing Bring Me The Maid in onto the hindquarter of Valentia and Bring Me The Maid losing its rightful running. After taking into account his guilty plea and T Clark’s excellent riding record, which was free of any suspensions since November 2010, the Stewards issued a penalty of three meetings to commence on Sunday, 13 April 2014 and to expire on Sunday 20 April 2014, on which day he may ride.

Trainer M P Moody indicated that, whilst he was of the view 1500m was a little short in distance today for Strawberry Boy, he shared the view of N Rawiller that Strawberry Boy did not handle today’s track. He undertook to report if there is anything amiss with Strawberry Boy subsequent to the race and stated he would look to now start the gelding over additional ground and on a firmer surface. A post-race veterinary examination of Strawberry Road revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery.

When questioned regarding Weary racing in an off pace position today, H Bowman stated his instructions had been to take up a midfield position, however, when Weary jumped well, he elected not to restrain it and, as a consequence, raced further forward than had been anticipated.
