PETER MOODY, Townsville’s special guest over the Cup carnival, had a swipe at officialdom during an entertaining speech at last Friday’s Calcutta.

Moody was not a wrap for the current administration – and the way racing is going in Queensland – and he is certainly not alone there.

He gave special mention to the recent appointment of a new senior steward which set the tongues wagging.

THE countdown for Cluden has begun and the big guns will arrive this week from all over for what is generally considered North Queensland’s biggest day of racing.

The iconic Cleveland Bay has attracted an entry of 29, including the best sprinters in the region plus a couple of southerners, and the time-honoured Townsville Cup will close the curtain on an eventful, topsy-turvy season for the TTC.

But it’s not just the horses that will parade at Cluden on Saturday.

THE bad news of the past week involves the ACCC application to the Federal Court for a review of the recent Tabcorp-Tatts merger – a deal that was and still is being hailed as a great breakthrough by every racing body in Australia with the exception of Racing Victoria –and, of course, the much-maligned corporate bookmakers.

The good news is Tabcorp has responded with a: “Bring it on”.

“The factual findings by the Tribunal of substantial public benefits and of no, or insignificant, detriment arising from the transaction are not in issue in the judicial review application.

“Tabcorp will oppose the ACCC’s application and will pursue an expedited hearing."
