DEAGON Racecourse will open up the gates to the community for a special community picnic day race meet for the first time since 1941 later this year.

Spring race date of 15th September has been selected for the first race day open to the public in over seventy years.

Councillor for Deagon Ward, Victoria Newton congratulated Sandgate and District’s Chamber of Commerce President Rhonda Sutton for successfully advocating for a picnic race day at Deagon.

“When we met with both Racing Queensland and the Brisbane Racing Club last year, Rhonda and I were pleased to see the suggestion of a community picnic race day was welcomed and supported as an idea for an annual event,” Cr Newton said.

“It’s a great partnership between local businesses, the racing community and the broader community.

“Most people living in the Sandgate area have never stepped foot onto the Deagon Racecourse precinct, and are keen to experience the atmosphere of a picnic race day in our own community.

“An annual event with a country race day feel is something local residents have told me they’re really keen to see happen.

“With a series of races, including some more unusual ones like wheelbarrow races, there’ll be plenty of fun and games to be had.

“And it’ll become another special event on our calendar which attracts people to come and visit the local area and rediscover all the wonderful things the Sandgate district has to offer.”

The Sandgate and District’s Chamber of Commerce is currently seeking sponsors for the Deagon Community Picnic Race Day. Contact Beth Wild from BWF Events Management on 0417 792 446 for sponsorship enquiries. A website will be up-and-running with details on how to purchase tickets and other details about the race day.
