EXCITING import MAWINGO has already been heavily backed and is all the rage for the Group 2 Hollidane Stakes when the national carnival spotlight swings to the GOLD COAST on Saturday.

MAWINGO landed a plunge at his Australian debut for the Anthony Freedman stable winning over the Flemington mile at his first start since finishing fifth in a Group One in Rome in November.

A potential Cups contender in the spring, MAWINGO steps up to a more suitable trip and has firmed from $4 to $3 favoritism ahead of star Kiwi filly SHEZ SINSATIONAL, $5.5, which will try to complete the New Zealand – Queensland Oaks double.

THOROUGHBRED Breeders Queensland Association President, Basil Nolan, would like to congratulate Kevin Dixon on his appointment as the new Racing Quenesland chairman, along with Warwick Stansfield, Greg Hallan and John Falvey who will join Kevin on the board.

“Racing in our State has died a slow death under Bob Bentley’s control and is in dire straits,” said Mr Nolan.

THE e-mail box this week covers a multitude of topics across the country from the emergence of the new Kevin Dixon Board at Racing Queensland, to claims this web site has let the racing industry down in Queensland, queries concerning whip use and if that aided the win by Niwot in the Sydney Cup, questions over how Americain is going for trainer David Hayes, a bagging for officialdom of the closeness of the Black Caviar and More Joyous races and questions over whether More Joyous is a genuine 2000m horse.

Here is this week’s selection with apologies to the few who missed out:

THE newly appointed Racing Queensland Limited (RQL) board today met with representatives of the Queensland Country Racing Committee (QCRC).

Consistent with the Government’s policy, country racing is high on the agenda of the board of RQL and Mr Greg Hallam was appointed to be the RQL board representative on the QCRC committee.

FOLLOWING the resignation of Racing Queensland Limited (RQL) board directors Bob Bentley, Tony Hanmer and Bill Ludwig, three new directors have today been appointed to the RQL Board.

Warwick Stansfield, Greg Hallam and John Falvey now join Kevin Dixon, who was appointed just over two weeks ago, and remaining board members Wayne Milner and Brad Ryan.

Mr Kevin Dixon has been today been appointed chairman of the board with a deputy chairman to be decided at the next RQL board meeting.

IN his widely-read column, ‘SILKS & SADDLES,’ published by the NORTH QUEENSLAND REGISTER, respected racing writer TERRY BUTTS reports on the opening of the new all-weather track at Mackay and how some wish they hadn’t removed the big fig trees.

He also remembers a great lady of racing in the north in Maria Stehbens, raises a concerning rumor concerning promised projects at tracks throughout the state and looks to the Cairns Amateurs.

THE e-mail box this week was totally dominated by issues on the political scene in Queensland highlighted by the change of racing control with three key members of the Bentley Board resigning and Kevin Dixon appointed by the Government. Our spy in the Deagon Bunker has provided another revealing in-sight into life in the Integrity Department at RQ since the departure of former boss Jamie Orchard took the money and ran. It seems that not only the new Board will be under the microscope. Stake-holders are closely watching the performance of the stewards, the racing media, including this website, and several key industry identities who will play a major role. The Saturday plunge debutante was the subject of a debate on whether stewards should have asked some questions about the scratching of the stablemate.

Here is this week’s selection with apologies to those who missed out:

IN his widely-read column, ‘SILKS & SADDLES,’ published by the NORTH QUEENSLAND REGISTER, respected racing writer TERRY BUTTS predicts that the Crime and Misconduct Commission is being briefed on areas of concern involving the era of the Bentley Board at RQL.

He also speaks to in-coming RQ Chairman Kevin Dixon about the recreation of the Queensland Country Racing Council with former Aramac Mayor and prominent bush bookie Gary Peoples likely to head up that body.

Here is the Butts column:
