M & M LOOKING TO REVERSE THEIR SPRING CARNIVAL FORTUNES
THE successful combination of trainer Mark Kavanagh and jockey Michael Rodd are looking to turn around their Spring Carnival fortunes with Shamoline Warrior in the $1.5 million Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby, 2500m, at Flemington on Saturday.
Strong support today for the Randwick Champion Stakes winner, Monaco Consul ($6.50 to $4.80) has seen bookmakers ease the price of favorite Shamoline Warrior slightly from $3 to $3.20.
Trainer Mike Moroney sent Monaco Consul to Australia with only one New Zealand win under his belt – a Maiden at Ellerslie. But he ploughed through the mud in the Champion Stakes in Sydney to win most impressively.
Shamoline Warrior, a winner at three of his only six starts, had Derby written all over him with a strong win in the Group 3 Norman Robinson, 2000m, at Caulfield last start. It was one of the most impressive Victoria Derby trials seen in years.
There have been some good early betting moves today on Fixed Odds markets for the Derby Day card, the best for the Peter Snowden-trained Demerit ($8 to $5) in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes for the three-year-olds.
