IT was a privilege to be at the Townsville Turf Club last Wednesday to farewell Shane McGovern. About 50 or 60 people gathered to pay their respects to the veteran jockey, who tragically died after an accident at Charters Towers.
In attendance were trainers and jockeys from the North West, Central West, and Townsville areas, as well as officials from Racing Queensland and QRIC. It was disappointing not to see Racing Queensland acting CEO Lachlan Murray or new Chairman Matt McGrath at the service, although Board member Kym Daly made the trip to Townsville.
This is what Shane’s wife Kim had to say, read out by her father Bob:
“If you are listening, I miss you so much buddy. You are my rock and my best friend. For over 25 years we had many mountains to climb and we did it together and rolled down the other side, laughing as we did.
“Everywhere I look, you are there. You are my soulmate, we were just meant to be together forever, continuing our greatest pleasure in life of doing what others said we cannot do.”
