‘THE Queensland Derby was hardly a quality race. Don’t expect the two Waller runners that fought out the finish to figure as stars of the Spring. The winner Providence had won one race from 14 starts before Saturday.’
‘GOOD things come to he who waits but the lesson to be learnt from the Derby win of Providence on Saturday is that trainer Chris Waller sets his horses for a grand final. It’s fraught with danger backing them in lead-ups, even if the champion trainer tips them as he did in the Rough Habit Plate when Providence (the favourite, ran third to stablemate Kilman). For the record Kilman was beaten over 10 lengths in the Derby but didn’t have an easy time in front.’
