SHADOW Racing Minister, Ray Stevens, has raised in State Parliament the question of impartiality on the part of Bob Bentley in his dual roles as chairman of Queensland Racing and on the Board of gaming company, Tattersalls.

Mr Stevens, speaking under privilege, called on Racing Minister Peter Lawlor to ‘carry out his ministerial responsibilities and to not let racing in Queensland go down the proverbial gurgler by a misguided and confrontational bullyboy Queensland racing board approach which does not answer to the industry and which has only the Labor Party minister to curb its self-imposed, grandiose plans and to control its dictatorial excesses.’

THE First Reading of a Bill to amend the Racing Act, which will see the three racing codes amalgamated from July, was introduced in the Queensland Parliament on Tuesday by Racing Minister Peter Lawlor.

Below is the statement to the House by Mr Lawlor as reported in the Parliamentary Hansard:

IN his popular weekly ‘Silks ‘n’ Saddles’ column in the North Queensland Register, Terry Butts reports that the new-beaut Sky Channel racing coverage has been, in a word, confusing.

You know the deal – some race meetings appear on Sky Channel 1 and others on Sky Channel 2 – and soon there will be an extra charge for it.

THE fight to save the Townsville Turf Club was the focus of today's Editorial in the Townsville Bulletin which we reproduce courtesy of the newspaper and News Limited. It reads:

FORMER Bjelke-Petersen Racing Minister Russ Hinze was many things to many people during his colorful political career.

QUEENSLAND Racing and the Townsville Turf Club are at war and their dispute is likely to finish up in court.

The Townsville Bulletin reports today that QR chairman Bob Bentley has accused the club of financial mismanagement while club president Allan Parry has accused Mr Bentley of being an autocrat and a bully with a desire to seize club assets.

SECTIONS of the racing industry in North Queensland are questioning the use of industry funds by Queensland Racing to run a full page paid advertisement in today’s Townsville Bulletin under the banner headline: ‘AN Open Letter To Townsville Racing Industry Stakeholders and Supporters.’

Individuals and industry groups have e-mailed this web-site criticizing what they describe as ‘propaganda in support of a takeover of the assets of the Townsville Turf Club by the Board of Queensland Racing.'

AN ugly battle has erupted as the controlling body of horse racing in the State, Queensland Racing Limited, attempts to take over the assets of Townsville Turf Club.

The TOWNSVILLE BULLETIN reports today that QRL's controversial chairman Bob Bentley has threatened to revoke the TTC licence if the committee and members do not agree to his latest takeover terms.
