TOWNSVILLE Turf Club is in financial trouble and Queensland Racing has issued it with a 28-day deadline to get its business in order or its licence will be revoked.

The Townsville Bulletin reports today that QR financial auditors visited the offices of the Townsville Turf Club last week to inspect the club's balance sheet and review the management structure.

FOR the first time since confidence in Queensland Racing reached an all-time low under an integrity regime that was eventually shown the door, punters can see some light at the end of the tunnel.

A positive outcome from the Baby Boom inquiry could well prove the catalyst for punters – big and small – to give betting on races in Queensland a second chance. The industry in the north desperately needs that confidence boost.

QUEENSLAND Racing stewards today continued an inquiry in respect to the running and handling of Baby Boom in race two the 3YO & Up Maiden Handicap 1000m conducted at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club on Sunday, January 3, 2010.

The trainer of Baby Boom at the time John Nikolic and jockey John Keating appeared before stewards today to provide further evidence to the inquiry.

DISGRUNTLED punters are starting to wonder how long it will be before they get to bet on the grass at a Sunshine Coast race meeting again.

The 'big wet' must be especially targeting Caloundra with the Sunday meeting at Corbould Park unbelievably transferred to the Cushion Track yet again - but this time as early as Tuesday.

IN his popular 'Silks and Saddles' column in one of Australia's leading rural newspapers, the North Queensland Register, racing writer TERRY BUTTS reports that there was good news and a little bit of bad news for the region last week.

After years of uncertainty, Cairns racing was given a lifeline with the surprise announcement by Queensland Racing Limited Chairman Bob Bentley of 20 TAB dates for the club next season.

THE top 16 horses nominated for the feature QTIS 600 race at the Gold Coast on Saturday have earned for their connections a total of over $1.273 million.

The most talked about Queensland racing initiative in years has hit the mark for industry stakeholders in its first season, and instalment two of QTIS 600 looks set to be bigger and better.

THE State Labor Government is continuing to eradicate country and provincial racing in Queensland, with the recent loss of the Annual Race Day meeting at McKinlay in North Queensland, organised by the McKinlay Race Club.

Shadow Minister for Racing, Mr Ray Stevens said today that he is appalled at the decision to eradicate, with no justification, country and provincial racing in Queensland when they are the life blood of rural and remote communities.

HAS Queensland Racing chairman Bob Bentley put the gun at the head of the Board of the Gold Coast Turf Club or do they deserve to have more information on the plans for the redevelopment of their complex before being forced to meet with QRL?

From the latest letter sent by Bentley to GCTC chairman, Andrew Eggleston, it appears that QRL is planning to side-step the Board and work up a proposal in consultation with other stakeholders.

QUEENSLAND Racing chairman, Bob Bentley, denies its a takeover but plans revealed yesterday confirm that the control body will operate the Cairns Jockey Club track.

IN his widely-read racing column SILKS ‘N’ SADDLES in the North Queensland Register, TERRY BUTTS tells of yet another damaging and shameful decision by the hierarchy of Queensland Racing that will sadly impact on country racing.

Without any consultation whatsoever, the North Queensland Amateurs has been stripped of its traditional annual Friday feature meeting for reasons which defy belief. We reproduce the Butts column courtesy of the North Queensland Register.
