A rejuvenated Royal Randwick will be the place to be on Melbourne Cup Day with thousands of racegoers set to flock to the course tomorrow (Tuesday.
New improvements including a bus way off Alison Road will make arriving and leaving Royal Randwick a better experience for race goers.
“I am delighted to welcome race patrons to Royal Randwick for Daracon Melbourne Cup Day, one of the biggest events on the Sydney social calendar,” acting Chief Executive Officer of the AJC, Darren Pearce, said today.“Sydney racegoers don’t need to be in Melbourne to enjoy the thrill of being trackside at the Melbourne Cup.
“Here, they can experience the excitement of seeing horses thunder down the Randwick straight, as well as watching the race that stops the nation on giant screens.
“Those interested in having a bet will have the choice of hundreds of TAB operators and on course bookmakers.
“It’s a fitting end to the 2009 Spring Carnival at Royal Randwick,” Mr Pearce said.
Mr Pearce said it would also be a great chance for thousands of the racegoers to experience, for the first time, major improvements at Royal Randwick, part of the $33 million first stage of the AJC’s Masterplan.
Patrons will enter via a new ‘front door’—a new bus way and pedestrian plaza with electronic signage and information systems.
Other improvements include a new taxiway off Doncaster Avenue, with undercover comfort for taxi users.
And racegoers can check out the ‘theatre of horses’—121 new race day stalls at the rear of the Leger Lawn with unprecedented access for the public.
Gates open at Royal Randwick at 9.30 am on Tuesday, with the first of nine races at 11.30am and the last race at 5.33pm
On course admission prices are $37 for adults (pensioners $9) with tickets also available now through Ticketek for $33 (adults) and $8 (concessions).
“On Melbourne Cup Day in Sydney, Royal Randwick is the place to be,” Mr Pearce said.
