RACING Minister Peter Lawlor was again conspicuous by his absence as yet another Labor mate trashed a Gold Coast sporting and tourism icon, the LNP said today.

Shadow Minister for Tourism and Fair Trading Ray Stevens said because of Labor mate Terry Mackenroth, the Gold Coast lost the Indy car race.

“Again because of Labor mate Terry Mackenroth, the A1GP fiasco tarnished the Gold Coast’s tourism reputation,” he said.

“Now Labor mate Bob Bentley seems happy to lose the Magic Millions to Victoria because the Gold Coast Turf Club won’t surrender to his demands to hand over its assets to him.”

Mr Stevens said Bligh and Labor’s Minister for Tourism and Fair Trading and member for Southport Peter Lawlor was conspicuous by his absence while the Gold Coast Turf Club was held to ransom by Labor mate Bentley.

“Clearly Minister Lawlor’s loyalty to his Labor mate overrides his loyalty to the Gold Coast Turf Club and the interests of Gold Coast tourism,” he said.

“As a former board member of the Gold Coast Turf Club and a continuing member of the club he is well aware of the views of his fellow members not to surrender their assets to Mr Bentley.

“As the minister responsible for racing he should intervene to DIRECT Bentley to keep the Magic Millions on the Gold Coast and not allow the Gold Coast Turf Club and, by extension the interests of Gold Coast tourism held to ransom by Queensland Racing.
