QUEENSLAND Racing Limited (QRL) today announced that it had warned off all racecourses in Queensland, Neville Clements, Alessandro Alaimo and Kevin McFarland.

The action arose out of QRL’s investigation into unusual betting on race two at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club on January 3, 2010.

The horse Baby Boom started that race as the short priced favourite but finished a disappointing fourth. QRL’s bet monitoring system immediately identified unusual betting with three punters heavily laying the horse on the Betfair betting exchange and stewards promptly opened an inquiry.

The three punters were identified as Clements, Alaimo and McFarland, the first two of whom were found to have a longstanding relationship with the trainer of Baby Boom, Mr John Nikolic. The third punter, McFarland, was found to be connected to Alaimo.

After taking evidence from Mr Nikolic and the rider of Baby Boom, John Keating, about possible contact between the various parties before and after the subject race, stewards sought the assistance of Clements, Alaimo and McFarland.

After taking part in an initial interview Clements failed to provide the assistance requested by stewards. Alaimo and McFarland refused to be interviewed and failed to provide any assistance as requested.

The assistance from the three punters would have greatly assisted stewards canvass relevant issues and properly conclude the inquiry. In those circumstances, the refusal and failure to assist potentially affects the integrity of the thoroughbred racing industry and the continued involvement in the industry by those that failed to assist represents an ongoing danger. It was on that basis that the punters were warned off.

Pursuant to the Australian Rules of Racing, a person warned off is subject to the same disabilities as a disqualified person. In particular, bookmakers are prevented from accepting bets from such persons. QRL will contact bookmakers (corporate and otherwise) and ensure they are aware of the action taken against the punters and the effect of the Australian Rules.

Arising out of the same investigation, QRL has issued to trainer John Nikolic a notice to show cause why he should not be warned off racecourses in Queensland.

Mr Nikolic has until April 16, 2010 to make submissions in this regard.

The rider of Baby Boom jockey John Keating cooperated with stewards throughout the inquiry and stewards believe there is insufficient evidence upon which to commence proceedings against him at this stage.
