THE first of five country cups to be showcased under the banner of the 2010 Melbourne Festival of Racing will be run this Sunday afternoon at Kilmore.
A quality field will gather on Valentine’s Day, less than an hour from Melbourne, for the running of the $110,000 Sportingbet Kilmore Cup (1600m).
The Listed race headlines a bumper nine race card which commences at 12.45pm (AEST), and offers an entertaining day for the entire family.The Excessories Fashions on the Field competition will prove a hit with the ladies, whilst the kids, who are admitted free, can enjoy a host of complimentary rides and activities.
Gates open at 11am with adult admission $15 and concession / pensioners $10.
The first lady of racing Gai Waterhouse will add some colour to the Kilmore Cup when she saddles up the topweight Joku, who’ll be ridden by Sydney-based jockey Nash Rawiller.
A last start winner of the John Dillon Stakes (1400m, Listed) at Caulfield, Joku must carry 59kg, but is yet to finish further back than second in seven starts over the distance.
The Clinton McDonald-trained pair Pacino and Rolling Stock will be worthy rivals as will this season’s Moonee Valley Cup runner-up Irazu who is the only horse in the field boasting a win over the track and distance.
Others key runners are Inkster, Scenic Scene, Tongi and recent Bairnsdale Cup winner Encroacher who finished sixth in this race 12 months ago.
Last start Flemington placegetter True Tales and promising four-year-old Bertonic are also capable of winning the cup, but both have accepted at Moonee Valley on Saturday also so they may not take their place at Kilmore.
After the Kilmore Cup, the Festival of Racing remains in regional Victoria for the running of the Listed $200,000 Luxbet.com Mornington Cup (2400m) next Wednesday, 17 February.
