KEVIN Dixon, the heir apparent to Bob Bentley as Racing Queensland chairman, has revealed how he was only convinced to take a Board position on the new body last weekend.

Mr Dixon said that despite the stories that had been run to the contrary on the letsghorseracing web site for the past six months he had ‘no intention of taking up the offer.’

“I thought there was still a lot to do where I was (at the Brisbane Racing Club),” he said. “I didn’t want to leave that job half done. I wanted to finish what I had started.

CAMPBELL Newman is moving quickly to reshape the board of Racing Queensland, saying the resignation of longtime chairman Bob Bentley and Labor powerbroker Bill Ludwig as a director would put the organisation back in the hands of people "with the interests of racegoers and the actual industry at heart".

MICHAEL McKENNA reports in THE AUSTRALIAN that the enmasse exodus led by Mr Bentley, whose future as Australian Racing Board chairman is now in doubt, followed pressure by the Liberal National Party government which has launched investigations into the running of the Racing Queensland and the $1.7 million payout of four executives after the March 24 election.

NEW SOUTH WALES apprentice Taylor Lovelock-Wiggins has been disqualified for six months for failing to provide a urine sample after another taken earlier had returned a positive.

Racing Queensland stewards charged Lovelockl-Wiggins after the positive sample was taken at Doomben in February. He was stood down from riding in early March and the penalty imposed was time servied.

However, Taylor Lovelock-Wiggins was further charged with failing to provide a urine sample as directed at Ipswich in early March and on that charge was disqualified for six months.

SOME of the issues raised in the Wednesday Whinge refer to the situation at Racing Queensland before it became clear in the last 24 hours that things had changed following the resignations of three key Board members, including Chairman Bob Bentley. There was strong response to a feature article written in the Gold Coast Bulletin by Peter Cameron concerning the changing face of racing in Queensland. The Integrity Department copped criticism over the suspension of ‘Nippy’ Seymour, the trainer of a horse involved in a fatal fall at Julia Creek. There was comparison between the rides of Gerald Mosse on Americain and Michael Rodd on Atlantic Jewel and questions why the Sydney racing media didn’t recognize the achievement of trainer Pat Carey in winning the Derby with Maiden galloper Ethiopia.

BRISBANE Racing Club Chairman Kevin Dixon has been appointed to the Board of Racing Queensland to enable a smooth transition when the resignation of three key directors takes effect on April 30.

An extra member had to be appointed or RQL would not have had sufficient to form a quorum if Chairman Bob Bentley, his deputy Tony Hanmer and Labor power-broker Bill Ludwig had resigned.

IN his widely-read column, ‘SILKS & SADDLES,’ published by the NORTH QUEENSLAND REGISTER, respected racing writer TERRY BUTTS reports on another bizarre ruling by Racing Queensland stewards in the north – will it ever end?

He also tells how the industry in the region is dumb-founded at the decision of stewards to suspend popular bush trainer ‘Nifty’ Seymour on a negligence charge after bandages came loose on a horse involved in a track-work fall which resulted in the tragic death of jockey Corey Gilby.

Here is the Butts column:

NORTH Queensland trainer Arhtur 'Nippy' Seymour has been suspended for six months on a charge of neglect in the fitting of gear to a horse in a trackwork incident which resulted in the death of a jockey.

However, they have ruled there was only a 'causal link' between the bandages coming loose and jockey Corey Gilby being dislodged in the fatal fall at Julia Creek in November.

The RQ Steweards' Report on the incident reads:

AN owner who struck top jockey Chris Munce across the head with a racebook following a race at Doomben in December has been disqualified for two months and fined $3,000.

Racing Queensland stewards imposed the penalty against owner Ewan Stoddart on a charge of conduct prejudicial to the image, or interests, or welfare of racing.

Below is the Stewards' Report on the incident:

RACING Queensland has described as 'a hoax' a Media Release doing the rounds suggesting that the four executives paid out their contracts in controversial circumstances have been reinstated.

"This is nothing more than a hoax. It highlights how low some of the mischief-makers in this industry are prepared to go to create trouble in the current circumstances," RQL Chairman Bob Bentley said.

WHEN it comes to issues of great importance to the racing industry we have found over the past 12 months that the Wednesday Whinge is a good barometer of the feelings of many stake-holders in the racing industry in Queensland. This week the e-mail box sent an overwhelming message to the LNP Government, its new Racing Minister Steve Dickson and the out-going Bob Bentley Board. The industry is far from happy at the snail’s pace the changeover is taking. They want something done to recoup the golden handshake of more than $1 million of industry funds that was paid to four executives of RQ who resigned two days after the election; and they want to see some new faces with fresh ideas and no scores to settle brought in to run the show and begin the task of lifting the racing industry from the canvas in Queensland. There were numerous other topics raised in the past week but this was an overwhelming response and a message that the new powers-that-be should be listening to.
