THE e-mail box this week was a mixed bag ranging from complaints about form reversals in Sydney and Brisbane to predictions on who will run the new-look Integrity Department at Racing Queensland; complaints about bookmakers operating at Gold Coast midweek meetings; more comment on out-going RQ Chairman Bob Bentley and calls for immediate changes to racing in the north; another view on the Licensing restrictions to country racing in Queensland and various other topics.

Here is this week’s selection with apologies to the few who missed out:

IN his widely-read column, ‘SILKS & SADDLES,’ published by the NORTH QUEENSLAND REGISTER, respected racing writer TERRY BUTTS calls on the new LNP Government to repeal the ridiculous Licensing rules that are preventing under 18-year-olds from attending big race days in Queensland.

He also reports on a horse nicknamed Giddy that finally broke its Maiden after 40 starts, the Charters Towers Cup triumph, fireworks on Saturday night at Cluden Park and reaction to the Mackay Harbor Race Day.

Here is the Butts column:

CHAMPION trainer PETER MOODY has unintentionally sent a strong message to those promoting ‘margin betting’ on Group races where outstanding gallopers are at what the majority of punters would regard as ‘unbackable’ odds.

Punters expecting BLACK CAVIAR to bolt in with the Group One Goodwood in Adelaide on Saturday were good judges but did their money cold and Moody admitted they were on a ‘belting to nothing’ before the race was even run.

“We are not playing games. It is all about what is right for the horse. People were suggesting she needed to be opened up. What a load of crap,” Moody said told the popular CORRECT WEIGHT program on RADIO SPORT NATIONAL.

'AS you slide down the banister of life you are bound to pick up a splinter or two in the arse,'' Jeff Perry, the unsung hero of the Vo Rogue saga, exclaimed. Mind you, it was more smooth travelling, albeit fast and furious, on a polished surface when it came to Vo Rogue, possibly Australia's greatest frontrunner.

MAX PRESNELL reports in the SYDNEY SUN HERALD that Vo Rogue, age 28, died during the week, under the care and attention of Perry to the end.

Few horses have promised less and gone so far. Possibly Takeover Target flashes from the memory bank, but he always had ability, matched by problems. Fortunately, Joe Janiak came up with the horse sense. Takeover Target has already been the subject of a life story colourful and worthwhile.

NORTHERLY, the champion who was born without a pulse but who enlivened racetracks around Australia, will be buried upright and facing east in the tradition of great warriors.

MATT STEWART reports in the MELBOURNE HERALD SUN that Northerly, put down late on Wednesday, at 15 years old, had suffered complications from a colic attack. He  will be buried at breeder Neville Duncan's Oakland Park stud near Margaret River, Western Australia.

BRISBANE race-goers will get the opportunity to sample the talents of Kiwi whiz-kid JAMES McDONALD when he struts his stuff with a nice book of rides as the carnival action hots up at DOOMBEN on SATURDAY.

McDonald, fresh from his Group One win on the international stage aboard the John Moore-trained Xtension in Hong Kong last Sunday, will partner TEMPLE OF BOOM in the G1 BGTC Cup; MALANDRINO if it starts in the G3 Rough Habit Plate and HOSS AMOR in the Listed Hampden Stakes.

A Central Queenslandd racehorse trainer has asked for an urgent review of safety protocols relating to race starts after his horse crashed its head into the steel starting gates before the start of a Rockhampton race last Thursday and died within minutes of subsequently performing dismally in the event.

TONY McMAHON reports in the ROCKHAMPTON MORNING BULLETIN that a post-mortem confirmed the horse Turf Music sustained a fractured vertebrae and finished tenth of 11 as a $15.00 chance in the Class 4 (1100m).

THE e-mail box this week again covers a multitude of topics across the country. It is spearheaded by a strong response from former RQ chairman Bob Bentley to the new decision of the Kevin Dixon Board to reinstate a $1.8mn administration subsidy to the Brisbane Racing Club. There are also e-mails from an angry lady thrown off the course at Randwick on Sydney Cup day because she was mistaken for an animal liberationist, questions concerning beaten Gai Waterhouse stable favorites; criticism for Mackay about their opening day promotion; praise for Peter Moody for giving it to the ‘Poms’ over Black Caviar and a number of other topics.

IN his widely-read column, ‘SILKS & SADDLES,’ published by the NORTH QUEENSLAND REGISTER, respected racing writer TERRY BUTTS reports on industry reaction to the opening day of the new all weather track in Mackay.

He writes about the loss of three popular trainers in the north and looks ahead to a race day with a difference on the beach at Mackay where ‘Miracle Mal’ Johnston and his colleagues from SKYWORLD’S ‘Off the Rails’ will be special guests.

Here is the Butts column:

THE popularity of stand-alone SATURDAY feature meetings outside the capital cities was again highlighted when the GOLD COAST and HAWKESBURY attracted good crowds.

There were the usual complaints about the Gold Coast track failing to accommodate the big fields with claims that there were many unlucky runners heading toward the carnival in Brisbane.
