IN his widely-read weekly column, ‘SILKS ‘N’ SADDLES,’ in the NORTH QUEENSLAND REGISTER respected racing writer TERRY BUTTS reports on complaints against UNiTAB services and concerns that the Queensland Racing web-site is being politicized.

His column has become a popular feature on this web-site as well. It reads:

A TOWNSVILLE punter, owner and at one time a major sponsor, recently asked UNiTAB CEO Brad Tamer to explain why he couldn’t access form on the UNiTAB website.

THE Ipswich Turf Club has again laid claim to the biggest crowd of the Queensland Winter Carnival and insist their Cup day on Saturday has again out-stripped Stradbroke Day at Eagle Farm as the most popular.

PETER FOLEY writing in the QUEENSLAND TIMES quotes club officials as claiming a crowd of more than 24,000, which rival clubs say is laughable and maintain must have been assessed through 3D lenses.

Here's the story by Foley, a popular and long-time racing writer in Ipswich, courtesy of the QT:

THE Ipswich Cup day crowd is tipped to test the record of just over 20,000 tomorrow with the local newspaper, the Queensland Times, carrying a headline which reads: ‘Booze Stockpiled For Cup Day.’

This has already prompted several concerned e-mails from race-goers questioning whether the same rules that applied at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke day (a minimum of two alcoholic drinks per order) will be implemented in the Labor stronghold.

IN his widely-read weekly column, ‘SILKS ‘N’ SADDLES,’ in the NORTH QUEENSLAND REGISTER respected racing writer TERRY BUTTS reports on one of the most widely travelled gallopers in the country.

‘THAT old warhorse Tora Tora Tora, which has probably covered more miles by road than any other racehorse in recent years, bombed the best that Rockhampton could muster last week with a highly courageous win in the Tattersall’s Cup (1600m).

The e-mail box has been inundated in the past 24 hours with angry reaction to the decision by the Queensland Government to commit almost $16 million to the Magic Millions Company to keep the event on the Gold Coast for the next seven years.

HERE is this week’s selection from the e-mail box:

BRISBANE Racing Club, an amalgamation of the Brisbane Turf Club and the Queensland Turf Club, in its first year of operation, has delivered the best Racing Carnival attendance results in years.

Chairman Kevin Dixon said today: “Carnival attendance was up 21 per cent, to a total of 57,000.

THE Super Saturday of Queensland racing on Saturday has been hailed a major success by even the toughest of interstate critics and could well prove to be the launching pad for some future stars.

Streamlining of the feature race programming – credited to the amalgamation of the two big clubs in Brisbane – has enabled Stradbroke Day to emerge as one of the most popular days on the Australian calendar.

THERE was good and bad news for the Bart Cummings stable on the eve of Super Saturday at Eagle Farm with Latin News securing a start in the Stradbroke but Landlord ruled out of the Queensland Derby with a leg problem.

Stewards ordered the scratching of the Gai Waterhouse-trained Swift Alliance which paved the way for Latin News to run in the $1 million Group 1 feature and his quote quickly shortened from $8.5 to $6.50.

IN a major setback for the ‘old guard’ on the Downs who campaigned hard against him, prominent breeder Bob Frappell has won election to the Board of the Toowoomba Turf Club.

Frappell, the outspoken president of Thoroughbred Breeders’ Queensland Association and a long-time thorn in the side of Queensland Racing chairman Bob Bentley, won a close ballot from accountant Greg Johnson and builder Jim Cosgrove.

MANY thousands will converge on Brisbane this weekend for the Stradbroke Super Saturday meeting at Eagle Farm while others wanting to venture afar will be off to England to rub shoulders next week with The Queen at the hugely popular Royal Ascot carnival.

But for those who prefer something uniquely different when they ‘Get Away and Go Racing,’ BARNEY CAMPBELL’S BIRDSVILLE BASH is on again this year with tour tickets always in demand.
