THE committee of the Rockhampton Jockey Club last night endorsed their members’ decision to partner with Queensland Racing Limited (QRL) in the development of a company that will own the land and existing infrastructure at Callaghan Park.

Rockhampton Jockey Club (RJC) chairman, Mr Justin Doyle said the RJC has a long history of working with the control body to improve the racing product in and around Rockhampton.

BRISBANE Racing Club Ltd (BRC) Chairman, Kevin Dixon, said today the new constitution for racing’s new Control Body remained hidden from all industry stakeholders.

The BRC has called for the secret Racing Queensland Ltd Constitution to be made public.

“Both the office of the Minster for Fair Trading and Tourism, Peter Lawlor MP and Queensland Racing Ltd (QRL) have confirmed, in writing, that a draft constitution for the new Control Body Racing Queensland Ltd exists,” Mr Dixon said.

YET another major Queensland newspaper has attacked the Government and Queensland Racing chairman Bob Bentley over proposed legislative changes that they fear will see an overhaul and loss of power for country racing.

The editorial opinion, in the latest edition of Queensland Country Life, suggests:

‘THE heavy hand of Queensland Government bureaucracy now seems determined to grab the reins of country racing and dispossess the large band of volunteers who have given their all for the sheer love of the sport.

YET another major Queensland newspaper has accused Queensland Racing Limited and its chairman, Bob Bentley, of making ‘a blatant power play’ and using ‘bully-boy tactics.’

The Gold Coast Bulletin has followed the editorial lead of its News Ltd sister-paper, the Townsville Bulletin, and gone into bat for a local Turf Club that is under pressure from the control body.

Here is the Editorial, courtesy of the Gold Coast Bulletin:

BELOW is a Question and Answer to stakeholders of the Gold Coast Turf Club by Queensland Racing Limited chairman Bob Bentley, posted on the control body web-site:

Dear stakeholder

The following questions and answers posed have been compiled so trainers, owners and members of the Gold Coast Turf Club (GCTC) are better informed prior to attending the meeting scheduled for Tuesday, May 11 at the GCTC.

GOLD Coast horse trainers have unanimously agreed to form a committee to oppose an unreasonable 122 per cent hike in the cost of training thoroughbreds at the Bundall track.

Daniel Meers reports in today’s Gold Coast Bulletin that the Coast's leading trainers and owners voted to have a four-person team represent them after the club's board imposed the increase which threatens to decimate their businesses.

IN his weekly ‘SILKS ‘N’ SADDLES’ column in the North Queensland Register, TERRY BUTTS suggests: THERE’S never a dull moment in the racing game – always something happening, always different.

Last week, we had the Australian Trainers’ Association (or at least some of its members) siding with Queensland Racing Limited against the Gold Coast Turf Club for putting up fees for the use of its training facilities.

On face value, the massive hike looked way over the top. You wonder how owners and trainers of horses on the Coast could possibly accept it.

LNP shadow Minister for Racing, Ray Stevens, has demanded racing’s 'invisible man', Labor Minister Mr Peter Lawlor, conduct an audit of Queensland Racing to find out where the funds from UNiTAB have gone over the years, before all racing codes are handed over to this same group of administrators under new legislation going through Parliament this month.

“How much racing industry money has been spent by this group of people on court cases and corruption inquiries?” Mr Stevens asked.

QUEENSLAND Racing today confirmed it had appointed the same accountancy firm which is looking at the Melbourne Storm to independently assess the books of major turf clubs across the State.

Chairman Bob Bentley said Deloittes will investigate a number of turf clubs in June including Brisbane, Gold Coast and Townsville to see if they are managing their finances properly.
