SUPER filly More Joyous showed her superiority by blowing away her rivals to win the $151,800 Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse and owned by John Singleton, the More Than Ready filly beat Trim and Sweepstaking in an impressive time considering the heavy conditions. More Joyous, ridden by Nash Rawiller, led from start to finish to win by 1 and ¾ lengths in the race for 3yo fillies and sent a warning to her Group 1 rivals that she will hard be hard to stop in this Autumn campaign.

Singleton told the 5661 spectators that Waterhouse had claimed More Joyous would be the best filly he had ever owned.

“Gai is an eternal optimist but that sounded like a pretty big claim even coming from her,” Singleton said.

“We have had an up and down ride with this filly but (Waterhouse) showed today why she will always be the first lady of racing.”

Queensland trainer, John Wallace’s Shootout won a photo finish with David Payne’s More Than Great to take out the $151,800 Group 2 Schweppes Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) in an upset.

Waterhouse’s Viking Legend took third place but her odds on favourite Manhattan Rain missed the start and was disappointing in the race for 3yo colts and geldings.

Paul Messara’s 6yo Alverta flashed home to win the $151,800 Group 2 Breeders Classic (1200m) from Waterhouse’s Montana Flyer and favourite Madame Pedrille.

Montana Flyer looked to have the race at her mercy until Alverta loomed up and snatched victory in the race for 4yo mares and older.

Race goers braved the early showers to enjoy a clear and balmy afternoon at Royal Randwick.

Group 1 racing will return to Warwick Farm for the first time in three years when the Patinack Chipping Norton Stakes Day is held on Saturday March 6.
