IN his widely-read column, ‘SILKS & SADDLES,’ published by the NORTH QUEENSLAND REGISTER, respected racing writer TERRY BUTTS reports on a challenge to the Closed Betting Ring at Oak Park by a leading North Queensland bookmaker that could have far reaching consequences for the industry statewide.

Butts also reports on the sad case of ‘Nippy’ Seymour the suspended trainer who continues to keep the Hughenden track in good order but has been treated so inconsistently and badly by the authorities after a terrible accident which resulted in the death of a jockey.

Here is the Butts column:

THE MEDIA RELEASE from RACING QUEENSLAND read STRICTLY EMBARGOED until 9am Friday, July 13, 2012. THAT didn't apply to the COURIER-MAIL.

We have broken this embargo because the story appeared in the morning newspaper. It is ljust a continuing joke of how the new RQL Board of Kevin Dixon treats those sections of the media that are not his mates and who dare to criticize.

Here is the Media Release that has the embargo on it that doesn't apply to the Courier-Mail:

THIS web-site continues to listen to what our readers have to say and has introduced a ‘Wednesday Whinge’ where you can express your feelings on racing industry issues of the past week. THE e-mail box went into over-drive late yesterday when news filtered through of the outrageous payouts to four executives of the Bob Bentley administration. The figure was much higher than that administration had admitted. The industry is angry and calling on the Government to take steps to recoup some of the money paid in what amounts to a golden handshake. That criticism deflected somewhat from growing concerns about the new Kevin Dixon Board ranging from whether there will be an Integrity Department to widespread disharmony in the country where clubs are adopting the motto: ‘We of the Never Never.’ There were a host of other topics raised by our readers.

Here is this week’s selection with apologies to those who missed out.

THE Auditor General’s report released today into separation payments made to four top Racing Queensland Limited (RQL) executives again showed the former Labor Government’s contempt for the racing industry.

Racing Minister Steve Dickson said his initial reading was that serious questions were raised by the conduct of the former RQL Board, which included Labor’s handpicked racing Tsar Bob Bentley and AWU boss Bill Ludwig.

IN his widely-read column, ‘SILKS & SADDLES,’ published by the NORTH QUEENSLAND REGISTER, respected racing writer TERRY BUTTS tells the sad story of jockey Tracey O’Hara who not only missed the winning Mackay Cup mount but suffered an injury that threatens her riding career.

He also reports on off-track complaints about Mackay Cup Day, how country clubs are starting to feel so neglected by Racing Queensland that they are adopting the motto – ‘We of the Never Never.’

Butts also again slams the licensing rules which continue to discriminate against racing in Queensland where under 18s allowed to the V8 spectacular in Townsville where there was grog aplenty and to add insult to injury youngsters will be admitted free to the Melbourne Cup carnival if accompanied by an adult.

THE e-mail box this week was highlighted by the concerns over the joke status that racing in Queensland is developing into under the new regime which is instructing stake-holders not to talk to this web site claiming that will put us out of business. They should worry about their own backyard instead of ours. The way things are going at RQ we will well and truly out-live them. There were also e-mails about the farcical ARB proposal to give lady jockeys an allowance; questions why Hugh Bowman was treated so leniently in a recent overweight fine imposed by Sydney stewards; questions on drug funding and many more mainly Queensland racing related whinges which we encourage you to send to a media outlet that will not be censored or silenced by the new powers that be in the north.

Here is this week’s selection with apologies to those who missed out.

IN his widely-read column, ‘SILKS & SADDLES,’ published by the NORTH QUEENSLAND REGISTER, respected racing writer TERRY BUTTS reports on a unique annual race meeting at Laura in the Cape Country which he visited last weekend.

He also looks ahead to next weekend’s Oak Park Amateurs and the Mackay Cup meeting, comments on another Integrity sacking at Racing Queensland and forecasts an appointment to a key role at the control body that will surprise the industry.

Here is the Butts column:

RACING Queensland Limited (RQL) is pleased to announce a new incentive scheme aimed at ensuring the future of a vibrant and viable oncourse bookmaking community in Queensland.

The fabric of the raceday experience is significantly enhanced by a well-functioning bookies ring and it is this function RQL wishes to preserve.

RACING Queensland Limited (RQL) has engaged Deloitte to undertake a Sustainability Review of the racing industry, both overall and on a per code basis, in Queensland.

The Sustainability Review will provide an insight into the current state of the racing industry and will allow the formulation of effective strategy with which to influence the future direction of racing in Queensland.

FROM July 1, 2012, Racing Queensland Limited (RQL) will be implementing a new model for the calculation of Race Information Fees following the NSW High Court Decision.

Earlier in the year, RQL held meetings with industry stakeholders, including representatives from bookmakers and clubs, to discuss the issues relating to Race Information Fees (RIF) and the authority application process for operators.
