SHADOW Racing Minister Ray Stevens today accused the Bligh Labor Government and Minister for Racing, Mr Peter Lawlor of 'ransacking town by town, country and provincial race meetings across Queensland.'

"In an unprecedented move by a State Government, this out of touch Labor Government is hurting the economic viability of country towns across Queensland with this move," Mr Stevens said..

IN his popular weekly column, SILKS ‘N’ SADDLES, in one of Australia’s leading rural newspapers, the North Queensland Register, TERRY BUTTS reports on more injustice being dealt to country racing by Government bureaucracy and officialdom.

‘FOR 70 years, literally hundreds of families, some residing as far away as Melbourne, have made the annual trek to Mt Garnet in North Queensland for the May Day weekend of racing and raging.

THE much-awaited meeting between Queensland Racing Limited and the Gold Coast Turf Club to determine the future of the Bundall complex appears to have ended in a stalemate.

QRL presented its vision for the redevelopment of the GCTC and chairman Bob Bentley has been quoted as saying: “We outlined to the board of the GCTC a plan to take racing forward on the Coast in an effort to secure major events like the Magic Millions for years to come.

SHADOW Minister for Racing, Ray Stevens, said today ‘support was mounting against the Bligh Labor Government’s introduction of their dictatorial piece of racing legislation that is a systemic takeover of all racing codes in Queensland.

“Stakeholders across the three racing codes are in uproar about this ill-advised takeover and asset grab of clubs across the State,” Mr Stevens said.

WEIGHING UP sums versus risk, trainer Tony Noonan has decided  Ortensia will bypass Singapore and focus on Brisbane's riches.

The Melbourne Herald Sun reports that Noonan had considered a hit-and-run raid on Singapore's $1 million Krisflyer Sprint at Kranji on May 16, but he has opted for four rich Group 1s in Brisbane, starting with the $400,000 BTC Cup at Doomben on May 15.

TODAY completes a milestone in the development of thoroughbred racing on the Sunshine Coast, with Queensland Racing Limited (QRL) and the Sunshine Coast Turf Club (SCTC) poised to operate a new business model from May 1, 2010.

The new partnership will see QRL manage and fund the training, racing and stabling facilities, with the SCTC concentrating on the marketing and development of the racing product and the members and public facilities at the SCTC.

In his popular weekly column ‘SILKS ‘N’ SADDLES’, TERRY BUTTS looks at the problems confronting Bob  Bentley as chairman of both Queensland Racing and the Australian Racing Board.

We reproduce the column courtesy of one of Australia’s leading rural newspapers, the North Queensland Register, which reads:

IN his column in The Sunday Mail in Brisbane, Racing Editor Bart Sinclair attacks what many believe is the most outrageous racing legislation ever introduced by a Queensland Government.

Most believe it is ‘all over Red Rover’ and that a Queensland Racing Board that contains members that weren’t wanted to start with will retain their seats without ever having to face an election. The only way they will be replaced is if there is a change of Government.

We reproduce The Sunday Mail column courtesy of News Ltd and Bart Sinclair, which is a ‘must read’ for all stakeholders. It reads:

THE Minister for Racing, Mr Peter Lawlor, must reign in Queensland Racing and encourage open and balanced negotiations to save Townsville Turf Club and one of their biggest race meets, the Townsville Amateurs.

Shadow Minister for Racing, Mr Ray Stevens said today in Parliament, that the reduction in funding for the Townsville Amateurs, from $225,000 to $120,000, and from two days to one day, is unfair and damaging to the local industry.
