AN ugly battle has erupted as the controlling body of horse racing in the State, Queensland Racing Limited, attempts to take over the assets of Townsville Turf Club.

The TOWNSVILLE BULLETIN reports today that QRL's controversial chairman Bob Bentley has threatened to revoke the TTC licence if the committee and members do not agree to his latest takeover terms.

QUEENSLAND Racing stewards today concluded an inquiry, opened on the evening of March 20, 2010 at Eagle Farm racecourse, when it was brought to their attention by betting steward Mark Sweeney that licensed bookmaker Lindsay Gallagher had in his possession a device capable of receiving or transmitting information other than that approved by the Principal Racing Authority.

During the course of the hearing Mr Gallagher provided evidence to stewards that due to difficulties encountered in the use of his approved laptop computer he had purchased and made use of a replacement laptop computer to access the internet which had not been submitted to Queensland Racing Limited for approval and installation of the relevant monitoring software.

QUEENSLAND Racing Limited (QRL) today announced that it had warned off all racecourses in Queensland, Neville Clements, Alessandro Alaimo and Kevin McFarland.

The action arose out of QRL’s investigation into unusual betting on race two at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club on January 3, 2010.

LEADING jockey Stathi Katsidis has claimed that former Queensland racing writer, Chris Roots, now employed by the Sydney Morning Herald, used a head-line grabbing topic to take him out of context concerning claims of illicit party drug use by jockeys and footballers.

The controversial story by Roots, who was formerly employed by the Townsville Daily Bulletin before joining the Fairfax Group with the Illawarra Mercury and then transferring to Sydney, prompted Katsidis to tell Queensland stewards that he ‘had been well and truly taken out of context.’

IN his popular weekly column ‘Silks ‘n’ Saddles’ in the North Queensland Register, Terry Butts reports that the gloves are off between Queensland Racing Limited and Townsville Turf Club.

Relations soured last Thursday after QRL delivered an offer that was totally rejected by the TTC. It was described as “no way similar” to other QRL agreements with TAB race clubs in Queensland.

QUEENSLAND Racing boss Bob Bentley has agreed to meet with the Gold Coast Turf Club (GCTC) board following a proposal put forward by the club yesterday – but it will be on his terms.

Bentley told gcbn.com.au that he will respond to the proposal and would seek a solution to a disagreement over equity arrangements, but not before the Easter break as Turf Club officials had hoped.

THE Morning Bulletin reports that Queensland Racing chairman Bob Bentley has not surprisingly congratulated members of the Rockhampton Jockey Club and the committee on their ‘foresight in favoring a joint partnership proposal’.

Racing writer Tony McMahon quotes Bentley as saying: “I’m elated. This is the way of the future. QRL will honor our commitment to ensure racing and training facilities at Callaghan Park are kept to the highest possible standard.

THIS web-site continues to listen to what our readers want and have decided to introduce a ‘Wednesday Whinge’ where you can have your say on what has happened in racing in the past week. Just e-mail: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Statistics show that ‘letsgohorseracing’ is one of the fastest growing racing web-sites in the country. One of our most read features has been the ‘Queensland Believe It Or Not’ file but readers are telling us that they want it expanded to cover a wider area of the racing world.

We hear what you are saying and it will be replaced in future by the ‘Wednesday Whinge.’ This does not mean we are softening our stance on all that is wrong in Queensland Racing. That will never happen while three of the key individuals behind this website have breath in their bodies. We will continue to attempt to legitimize e-mails, which we ask that you limit to three paragraphs.

IN his popular column, ‘Silks and Saddles’ in the North Queensland Register, TERRY BUTTS reports that the famous Mt Garnet race meeting on the May day weekend, that has been much more than a highlight of the North Queensland racing calendar for 60 years or more, is under threat.

It is the latest target for outrageous licensing stipulations, that border on the unreal. The club has been handed a raft of totally unnecessary and unrealistic demands by police and Licensing that severely threatens the future of this legendary weekend – an event that some might even describe as iconic.

RACING Queensland, the new merged entity to run the three codes, will begin operation from July 1 with the thoroughbred industry deprived of the opportunity to vote on whether they want current QRL directors Bob Bentley, Tony Hanmer and Bill Ludwig to continue.

The trio, who has have never been required to stand for re-election to the QR Board, will be automatically granted another five-year term under legislation being pushed through Parliament by Racing Minister Peter Lawlor.
