TRAINER David Hayes has suffered a major double blow, losing two top-class imports - one died after an operation and the other had to be put down.

Matt Stewart reports in today's Melbourne Herald Sun that Changingoftheguard died on Tuesday night following complications from a simple gelding operation and Our Aqaleem, a leading chance in Saturday's Australian Cup, smashed a shoulder in trackwork at Flemington on Wednesday morning.

RACING Victoria Limited (RVL) has announced that the 2010 jumps racing season will commence on Saturday, 17 April at Hamilton, 11 days later than originally planned, owing to delays in constructing the new obstacle.

Two of the three races programmed for Warrnambool on 6 April have been transferred to Hamilton, who will now host four jumps races over their two-day Cup Carnival on 17 and 18 April. Three flat races will fill the gaps left on the 6 April meeting at Warrnambool.

IN-FORM three year-olds Denman and More Joyous joined some of the country’s best thoroughbreds when first acceptances were announced for the $1.5 million Group 1 Emirates Doncaster Mile (1600m) to be held on Saturday, April 17.

Three year-olds have a proud history in the Emirates Doncaster, winning 14 of the last 27 races, with Triple Honour the last to claim victory in 2008.

EXCITING three-year-olds Monton, Hanks and Shoot Out are set to light up Royal Randwick on Saturday after they accepted for the $350,000 Group 1 Turnpoint Randwick Guineas (1600m) today.

Monton took all before him in claiming the Hobartville Stakes a fortnight ago, with the John Wallace trained Shoot Out finishing 1 ½ lengths behind in second place and Captain Sonador a further length behind in third.

THE Australian Jockey Club’s premier 1,200 meter sprint, the Group 1TJ Smith Stakes, has received major international status, with its winner to be an automatic entry in American Turf racing’s premiere sprint, the US$1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint also over 1200 metres.

ONE-EYED SYDNEY STORM SNIPING CAME AS NO SURPISE

IT came as no surprise that some Sydney racing commentators were keen to ‘bag’ Victorian stewards for proceeding with the Newmarket in the eye of the big storm that battered Flemington on Saturday.

Those same critics turn a blind eye to what happens in Sydney on a regular basis that irks most punters, like the high profile galloper that ran a close fourth recently, should have bolted in, but did not attract even a mention from stewards. There are plenty of punters Austraia-wide wishing RVL chief steward, Terry Bailey, was running the show in Sydney.

GAI Waterhouse’s warhorse Theseo surprised a sensational field to snatch the Group 1 $300,000 Patinack Farm Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Farm today.

The multiple Group 1 winning 6yo fought back on the line to pip Chris Waller’s favourite Rangirangdoo in a photo finish thrilling the 9708-strong crowd.

A CHANGE in training tactics with perennial bridesmaid Wanted enabled Peter Moody to snare the $1 million Group 1 Newmarket Handicap only minutes before a massive hail storm forced the postponement of the remainder of the Super Saturday card at Flemington.

Frustrated after Wanted had run three seconds and a fourth at his recent Group One starts, Moody decided a change of environment might do the trick and added some work in the country over the jumps which paid handsome dividends.

HOW THE MAJOR NEWS SERVICES COVERED THE NIKOLIC HEARING

EXPLOSIVE revelations that on the surface appear extremely damaging to the career of top jockey Danny Nikolic were made during an at times heated hearing before the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board on Friday.

Legal counsel for Nikolic tried unsuccessfully to have statements made by lawyers acting for the Racing Victoria stewards panel suppressed claiming they were ‘on a fishing expedition.’

Here are detailed reports on the hearing courtesy of several of the nation’s leading newspapers, associated agencies and racing journalists:

THE best field in many years has accepted for Saturday’s Group 1 $300,000 Patinack Farm Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m), including 10 individual Group 1 winners.

Headed by last year’s AJC Epsom and Doncaster Mile winners, Rock Kingdom and Vision And Power, a stellar field of 14 will contest the weight-for-age mile at Warwick Farm this Saturday in what promises to be one of the races of the Autumn.
