THE Australian Racing Board has effectively ended the whip rules debate after a review voted to stay with controls introduced last year.

According to Tim Habel in today’s Melbourne Herald Sun: ARB chief executive Andrew Harding said although the board would continue to monitor the use of the whip, the controls were designed to remain long-standing rules.

BY his standards, local trainer Mick Price is set for a relatively quiet day at Caulfield on Saturday as he saddles up only three runners for the afternoon – and all in the $100,000 Listed Programmed Property Services Anniversary Vase.

He also has multiple feature runners at Morphettville in what could prove to be a case of déjà vu and anything but a quiet day in Adelaide on Saturday.

TODAY will mark another day when the dysfunctional Australian racing industry once more delays the inevitable.

PATRICK SMITH, in his controversial column in The Australian, reports that ‘today will mark another day when the dysfunctional Australian racing industry once more delays the inevitable.’

RACING Victoria Limited Chief Steward, Terry Bailey, this morning came out in solid defense of his handling of Saturday’s whip-rule drama in the controversial Australian Cup finish.

Bailey, speaking on the Prime Time Sports Breakfast Show on Sport 927 in Melbourne, said all owners could lodge a protest if they felt the whip rules had been breached.

CONTROVERSIAL jockey Danny Nikolic was today fined $5,000 by the Victorian Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board for failing to produce his mobile phone for inspection of a contacts list by Racing Victoria stewards.

The RAD, under the chairmanship of Brian Forrest, issued the fine after a hearing during which Nikolic handed the phone over after being told he would lose his license if he failed to do so.

RACING Victoria's Terry Bailey says he won't be counting the number of times whips are used before sounding correct weight in races.

As connections of Australian Cup runner-up Sirmione consider legal action, Bailey told the Melbourne Herald Sun: "We are not going to hold up correct weight to count the number of hits, otherwise we'll never get races run. I didn't even know myself on Saturday until after we watched the film."

WHILST the majority of our ‘supposed leading and respected racing scribes’ covered their eyes, MAX PRESNELL, one of the most respected in the land, at least went into bat for punters after what can only be described as a debacle at Randwick on Saturday.

Presnell penned a wonderful column piece in today’s Sydney Morning Herald under the head-line: ‘FOUR-LEGGED AND TWO-LEGGED BANDITS GET OFF SCOT-FREE, WITH NO SATISFACTION FOR PUNTERS.

THE owners of Sirmione are theatening legal action if stewards refuse to consider stripping  Zipping of the Australian Cup.

ROD NICHOLSON reports in the Melbourne Herald Sun that Zipping's jockey Nick Hall disregarded the whip rules to get the eight-year-old gelding home by a nose in the Group 1 event at Flemington on Saturday.

JUST when punters were starting to think that ‘headline hunter’ Ray Murrihy had gone missing in action, the Racing New South Wales Chief Steward is back in the lime-light.

Murrihy has stolen some of the spotlight from the Danny Nikolic inquiry in Victoria by launching his own controversial investigation into security measures at Racing Information Services Australia.

THE new Sky Racing Media Centre has been launched with a free two month trial before the pricing package kicks in, prompting thousands of ordinary punters to question how much they will be charged for Sky Racing2 when it is launched on Pay-TV at the end of March.

Account customers with the two major TAB agencies operating out of Sydney and Melbourne will have free acess to all Sky Racing Media Centre services - but there is a catch. They have to be Platinum, Gold or Silver account holders but no indication is given of how much these punters invest on a weekly basis.
